The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed a deadly midnight attack by suspected bandits on Yashikira community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, during which part of the palace of the Emir of Yashikira was set ablaze and 10 residents abducted.
According to Sahara Reporters, Emir’s wives were among the victims abducted by the assailants.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, also targeted the Yashikira Police Divisional Headquarters, although police operatives on duty reportedly repelled the assault on the station.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the spokesperson of the command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi.
According to the statement, the armed attackers stormed the community at about 2:00 a.m. in what the police described as a coordinated and desperate assault.
The statement read, “The Kwara State Police Command condemns in the strongest possible terms the cowardly and audacious attack carried out by suspected bandits in the early hours of today 25/5/26, in Yashikira, Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.
“The armed criminals, in a coordinated and desperate assault at about 0200hrs, simultaneously attacked the Yashikira Police Divisional Headquarters and the Palace of the Emir of Yashikira.
“During the attack, part of the palace was set ablaze, while ten people were abducted and taken to an unknown destination. However, the attack on the Police station was successfully repelled by police operatives on duty.”
The police said following the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, CP Ojo Adekimi, immediately ordered a full-scale tactical operation involving multiple security agencies and local security outfits.
According to the command, the operation includes personnel from the police, military, forest guards, vigilantes and other security stakeholders who have begun combing nearby forests and suspected criminal hideouts in a bid to rescue the abducted victims and track down the attackers.
The command insisted it would not succumb to threats or intimidation by armed groups operating in any part of the state, declaring that security operatives were prepared to confront the criminals with every available operational strategy.
“The Commissioner of Police wishes to categorically state that the Command will not bow to threats, intimidation, or acts of terror orchestrated by bandits and criminal elements operating within any part of the state,” the statement said.
“The Command remains battle-ready and fully determined to confront these enemies of peace with every lawful operational asset and strategy at its disposal.”
“These criminals have declared war against peace-loving citizens, and we are fully prepared to hunt them down relentlessly. We will deploy everything within our operational capacity to smoke them out of hiding, dismantle their networks, rescue all abducted victims, and ensure they face the full wrath of the law,” the police command added.
The police, however, assured residents that security deployments had been reinforced across vulnerable communities, while surveillance and intelligence-gathering operations were ongoing.
“The Command further assures residents of Yashikira, Kaiama LGA, and the entire State that security operations have been intensified across vulnerable areas. In addition, surveillance, intelligence gathering, and aggressive bush-combing operations are ongoing,” Ejire-Adeyemi said.
