BREAKING: Former First Lady Sentenced To Four Years In Prison For Abuse Of Office

South Korea’s political landscape has been further shaken by a high-profile conviction that underscores concerns about abuse of office at the highest levels of power, as former First Lady, Kim Keon Hee, was sentenced to four years in prison by an appeals court on Tuesday.

The ruling marks a significant escalation from an earlier judgment and places renewed scrutiny on the conduct of officials linked to the administration of former President Yoon Suk Yeol.

The appellate court not only increased Kim’s sentence but also reversed part of a lower court’s decision, finding her guilty of participating in stock manipulation alongside multiple traders.

According to the court, Kim played a direct role in influencing the price of a thinly traded Korean stock, overturning a previous acquittal on that charge.

The judgment also reinforced findings of bribery, concluding that she accepted luxury gifts — including two Chanel bags and a Graff necklace — valued at approximately 80 million won ($54,257) from the Unification Church, while being aware that the organisation expected political favours in return for its overseas business interests.

In delivering the verdict, the court strongly condemned her actions, stating: “Kim exerted her influence as first lady and committed the bribery.”

The lead judge added, “She damaged public trust in government transparency and caused a rift in public opinion over national affairs.”

Beyond the prison sentence, the court imposed a fine of 70 million won and ordered the confiscation of the necklace, further emphasising the gravity of the offences.

The ruling reflects a broader judicial stance against the misuse of public office for personal or political gain, particularly when it undermines democratic institutions.

Kim, who has been detained in jail since August, had earlier been sentenced to 20 months in January for bribery, while being cleared of other charges at the time. However, the appeals process significantly altered the legal outcome, expanding her culpability to include stock manipulation.

Additional allegations, including illegally backing a candidate in a 2022 by-election, were reviewed, though the appellate court upheld the earlier decision that she was not guilty of breaching election law.

Despite the ruling, Kim has continued to deny all charges. Her legal team has indicated that she will challenge the decision at the Supreme Court, setting the stage for a prolonged legal battle that could further shape public discourse around political accountability in South Korea.

The case forms part of a broader wave of prosecutions linked to scandals surrounding her husband’s administration, including the controversial imposition of martial law in 2024. Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from office last April, was sentenced to life imprisonment in February after being found guilty of masterminding an insurrection tied to the declaration.

The fallout has extended to other senior officials. Former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo was handed a 23-year prison term after judges ruled he “turned a blind eye” to Yoon’s plan, while several aides remain on trial over their alleged involvement.

Together, the convictions highlight a sweeping judicial crackdown on abuses of power within South Korea’s political elite, reinforcing calls for transparency and accountability while exposing the deep fractures left in the country’s governance.
