BREAKING: FIFA Bans Argentina’s Paredes For 10 Matches, Molina For Seven

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes has been handed a 10-match suspension by FIFA for his role in the post-match clashes that followed his side’s 1-0 defeat by Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.

Team-mate Nahuel Molina has also been suspended for seven matches after being found to have been involved in the altercations at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on July 19.

As reported by BBC Sport on Friday, the disciplinary action follows FIFA’s investigation into the ugly scenes after Spain secured the World Cup title.

Paredes was involved in clashes with Spain players, while Molina was accused of striking Spain captain Rodri as Spanish players celebrated their victory.

FIFA had opened disciplinary proceedings against Paredes on three counts of assault and against Molina on two assault charges, alongside a separate allegation of unsporting behaviour.

Argentina have also been hit with a financial and stadium sanction. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has been fined $321,000 (£243,000) over a series of disciplinary breaches, including discriminatory chants and gestures by supporters, tea m misconduct and the use of a sporting event for non-sporting demonstrations.

The AFA has additionally been ordered to play its next two home matches with restrictions on spectators, with one match of the sanction suspended.

The federation’s punishment also relates to a political banner displayed by Argentina players after their 2-1 semi-final victory over England.

The banner carried the message asserting Argentine sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Islas Malvinas.

FIFA had classified the display as a potential breach of its rule against using sporting events for non-sporting demonstrations.

The sanctions bring a disciplinary conclusion to a turbulent end to Argentina’s World Cup campaign. Spain won the final 1-0 after extra time, with the match officially recorded as taking place on July 19 at the New York/New Jersey Stadium.
