Tears and tributes flowed freely as the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja was laid to rest in Abuja on Friday, November 15.

The burial took place at the National Cemetery in the nation’s capital marking an end to two days of funeral rites that began in Lagos earlier in the week.

His body was lowered to Mother Earth at exactly 4:41 pm after the ceremony that lasted four over two hours.

Lagbaja’s casket, draped in Nigeria’s green and white colours, arrived at the cemetery around 3 pm in a white funeral wagon after a funeral service at the National Christian Centre in Abuja.

Several dignitaries attended the event. President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima; the Acting Chief of Army Staff Lt.Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; the Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa; the Minister of Defence Abubakar Badaru and other top government officials and military brass graced the occasion.

Tinubu Confers Posthumous CFR Honour On Lagbaja

President Bola Tinubu has conferred the national honour of a commander of the federal republic (CFR) on Taoreed Lagbaja, the late chief of army staff.

The posthumous award was presented during a funeral ceremony held on Friday at the National Cemetery in Mogadishu, Abuja.

The president said the late COAS was a trusted advisor and a man of prudent action who cared more for the country and those who served under him.

“Throughout his military career, his legacy of service will be cherished forever,” Tinubu said.

”As an eternal symbol of our appreciation, I’ve granted late Chief of Army Staff the posthumous national honor of Commander of the Federal Republic of Niger.”

Tinubu said Lagbaja was one of his “best appointments”, adding that he had an abiding faith in the capability of the armed forces.

“While we are saddened by his passing, we still celebrate his life. Thus, we must rededicate ourselves to the principles and love of a nation for which he stood. As such, I am filled with pride as a remarkable career of the selfless professional who gave everything for Nigeria,” Tinubu added.

“For his courage, sacrifice, and leadership general Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja will forever reside in the pantheon of military greats.

“Lagbaja had a clear understanding about the role of the military in securing and defending our country, it’s people and their hard-won constitutional democracy.

“He displayed uncommon valor in the charge of his duty and in the administration of the rank and file for he cared about their welfare and that of their families.”

Also speaking, Christopher Musa, the chief of defence staff, said the armed forces will use Lagbaja’s death “to resolve further to defeat all enemies of the state, wherever they are, whether within or outside”.

He said the late COAS was a leader who “walked the talk” and led with integrity and purpose, earning the respect and admiration of his peers, subordinates, and even adversaries.

“His tenure was marked by decisive actions against insurgency, banditry, and other threats to our nation’s peace,” he said.

“His efforts significantly enhanced the operational readiness and the morale of the Nigerian Army.

“But beyond his professional achievement, General Lagbaja was a man of profound faith, kindness, and humility. He was a devoted family man, a mentor to many, and a friend to all who crossed his path.”
