A plane has crashed into the sea in Thailand, claiming the lives of everyone on board. The doomed flight carried six people, all police officers, who died as the small craft crashed into the Gulf of Thailand near Cha-am’s coast in the country’s southwest at about 8.25am local time (2.25am UK time).
The local constabulary confirmed the tragic incident occurred during a test flight mission, which was part of prep for an upcoming parachute jump exercise.
The forces statement read: “The Royal Thai Police would like to express their deepest condolences and sympathy.”
They also revealed that the casualties included the pilot, who was part of the police team.
Pictures from the scene show the shattered remains floating in the water, with emergency crews swarming after a frantic search for the aircraft and its occupants. They were met with a grim sight: four souls had perished on impact, and despite paramedics’ valiant efforts, the remaining two bobbies were pronounced dead.
One person, believed to be the pilot, was whisked to hospital, where he died.
The identities of those killed in the Thailand disaster have not yet been disclosed.
An investigation into the cause has been opened, though Police General Kittirat Phanphet, the national chief, has travelled urgently to the scene to oversee operations and monitor the situation.
The chief declared: “The families of the victims will be closely supported and funeral arrangements will be made for them. I have ordered a detailed investigation into the cause of the crash.”
In the latest update, the Prachuap Khiri Khan Provincial Police said: “We are currently coordinating with relevant agencies to provide assistance because the incident occurred in the sea, far from the shore, which makes it difficult to provide assistance. If there are any further details, we will report them.”
