Armed bandits have killed an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I (ASI I), Ibrahim Usman Babagiwa, of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and set his body ablaze following an attack on a surveillance team in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The incident occurred on October 6, 2026, along the Tungan Taya–Woko axis, while Babagiwa and an Inspector of Immigration were conducting a surveillance operation.
The officers reportedly came under attack by armed men at Woko village, resulting in Babagiwa’s death. The Inspector sustained machete injuries but managed to escape.
The Niger State NIS Command said the injured officer was stable and responding to treatment.
Babagiwa’s remains were discovered burnt two days after the attack. He has since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
The command confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, DSI Muktar Abubakar, on behalf of the Comptroller of Immigration Service, Niger State Command.

Despite the incident, the NIS command reaffirmed its commitment to combating irregular migration and addressing other security challenges along the international border.
It said the service remained resolute in discharging its statutory responsibilities despite the area’s prevailing security challenges.
