The Nigerian army has arrested Mohammad Yusuf, a soldier declared wanted over his alleged involvement in the illegal supply of military accoutrements to terrorists.
Yusuf, attached to the Nigerian Army Ordnance Kits Factory in Lagos, was arrested at about 6:30 pm on July 25 at Jidari Bus Stop in Maiduguri, Borno state, by troops of the 7 Provost Group.
In a statement on Sunday, Mohammed Goni, acting military information officer of Operation HADIN KAI, said Yusuf was declared wanted by the army on July 23 over the same allegations.
According to the statement, the suspect was apprehended while allegedly attempting to flee to Cameroon following intelligence received by the troops.
The army said preliminary investigations revealed that Yusuf absconded from his unit on July 7 before relocating to Maiduguri, where he allegedly went into hiding in the Gomari Costain area of Jere LGA with the assistance of an associate.
The suspect is currently in the custody of the 7 Provost Group, where further investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of his activities and identify any accomplices.
The army said the arrest highlighted the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations and the army’s commitment to holding personnel accountable for actions that undermine military discipline, ethics and national security.
Operation HADIN KAI reiterated that there is no safe haven for individuals who support terrorism or other forms of criminality, regardless of their status.
The military also urged members of the public to continue providing credible and timely information to security agencies, describing public cooperation as critical to ongoing efforts to restore peace and security in the country.
