Arewa Youth Group Knocks Senate Over NNPC Probe, Calls Allegations Against Kyari Misleading

Our attention has been drawn to the recent claims made by the Senate Public Accounts Committee under the leadership of Ahmed Aliyu Wadada alleging misappropriation of funds in the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited during the tenure of Mele Kyari, Umar Ajiya and Bala Wunti.

We wish to categorically state that the allegations being circulated are false, misleading, and a gross misrepresentation of facts.

During the tenure of Mele Kyari as Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, the organization underwent one of the most significant reforms in its history.

Under his leadership, NNPC transitioned into a commercially driven limited liability company in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act, ushering in a new era of transparency, corporate governance, and financial accountability.

It is on record that during this period:
NNPC published audited financial statements consistently, a practice that had not been sustained for decades prior.

The corporation strengthened its internal financial control systems and international audit compliance standards.

Several reforms were implemented to improve operational efficiency and revenue remittances to the federation.

The attempt by the committee led by Ahmed Aliyu Wadada to portray the management team of Mele Kyari, Umar Ajiya, and Bala Wunti as complicit in misappropriation without presenting verifiable evidence raises serious concerns about the credibility and intent behind such claims.

Public institutions must exercise the highest level of responsibility when making pronouncements that can damage reputations and undermine public confidence in critical national institutions like the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

We therefore call on the Senate Public Accounts Committee to:
Provide verifiable evidence to support its allegations.

Avoid statements capable of misleading the public or politicizing institutional reforms.

Uphold due process and fairness in the discharge of its oversight responsibilities.
Nigeria’s petroleum sector has only recently begun to witness structural reforms aimed at transparency and efficiency. Attempts to distort facts or malign individuals who played key roles in these reforms only serve to distract from the progress already achieved.

The public is therefore advised to treat the allegations currently being circulated with the utmost caution until credible facts are presented.

Signed:
Amb Muhammad Abubakar Sardauna,
President,
Arewa Youth Ambassadors
