Bolaji Abdullahi, national publicity secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is actively undermining opposition parties and shrinking the democratic space.
In an X post on Tuesday, Abdullahi said when rumour began circulating that the ADC leadership was considering the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) as an option after Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, PRP national chairman, paid a visit to David Mark, the APC went to work on the PRP.
“Although this (ADC emptying into PRP) is not true, it took only that single whiff of speculation for a faction to emerge almost overnight in what had been a historically tranquil political party, challenging the leadership of Baba-Ahmed,” Abdullahi said.
“This is the reality of Nigeria’s shrinking democratic space under the All Progressives Congress.
“The government may continue to deny any involvement in the crises within other parties, insisting that these are merely internal failures, but the pattern is visible. The world can see what is happening.
“More importantly, they can see where this path leads. But here is the question: is there no one within the APC who can caution those engineering crises in opposition parties that they are, in fact, sowing the seeds of national instability?”
The former sports minister added that the APC’s political strategy is firmly anchored on sabotage and nothing else.
“A political strategy that is anchored on sabotaging every opposition platform is ultimately self-destructive,” he said.
“When people are left with no options, they are, in reality, left with no choice.”
Abdullahi had on April 25 accused the APC of plotting to disrupt a national summit of opposition political parties.
The event was held in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.
“We have uncovered plans by the ruling APC to disrupt the summit being held by the opposition parties in Ibadan, Oyo State, today, 25th of April,” Abdullahi wrote on X.
“After denying us the use of venues in Abuja, they now will not leave us alone to hold our meetings.”
