Eight members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday announced their defection to various political parties as part of moves to reposition their political careers ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Of the defectors, three joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), two moved to the All Progressives Congress (APC), two defected to Accord Party, while one member joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Those who changed parties include Abubakar Abdul Buba (Niger), who moved from the PDP to the APC; Sani Yakubu Noma (Kebbi), PDP to ADC; Ibrahim Mohammed Bunza (Kebbi), PDP to APC; Mudashiru Alani (Osun), PDP to Accord; and Olusoji Adetunji (Osun), PDP to Accord.
Others are Thaddeus Attah (Lagos), who defected from the Labour Party (LP) to ADC; Bashir Usman Zubairu (Kaduna), APC to ADC; and David Abel Fouh (Taraba), APC to PDP.
The lawmakers attributed their defections to internal crises within their former parties, citing litigations, divisions and unresolved disputes, which they said hindered their ability to effectively serve their constituents.
Meanwhile, the House adjourned plenary to Wednesday in honour of a member representing Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency of Kano State, who recently died after a prolonged illness.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, described the development as a dark moment for the House, noting that the deceased was a committed member of the Committee on Constitution Review.
Clad in black attire and a matching cap, Kalu remarked that the mood of the chamber reflected the sombre nature of the loss.
