Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has said his wife, Margaret Obi, has her own business and income, amid controversy over an alleged N250 million Hermès handbag.
Obi made the clarification during an interview in Washington, DC, USA, while responding to questions surrounding the luxury handbag reportedly carried by his wife.
The handbag has triggered renewed discussions about the former Anambra State governor’s public image of prudence, particularly given his reputation for advocating prudent management of public resources.
Obi, however, said he does not concern himself with how his wife spends her personal money, provided her lifestyle does not interfere with his handling of public funds.
He also recalled that his wife was more sophisticated in her fashion choices before he became governor of Anambra State.
“My wife has her own business and her own money, so what is my business if she buys expensive items with her money?
“The bags and shoes my wife wears, I don’t even know how much they cost. In fact, she is actually a bit less sophisticated now,” Obi said.
The NDC presidential candidate further explained that he did not establish an office of the First Lady during his tenure as Anambra governor.
He also noted that although he does not personally celebrate his birthday, he does not prevent others from marking the occasion.
