After 40 Years In Power, 81-year-old Museveni Sworn-In As Uganda President

Yoweri Museveni has been sworn in for his seventh term as President of Uganda, extending his rule to 40 years after first taking office in 1986.

The inauguration ceremony took place on Tuesday at the Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala following his victory in the January 2026 presidential election.

According to the official results, the 81-year-old secured 71.65 per cent of the vote, defeating his main challenger, Bobi Wine, who polled 24.72 per cent.

The president took the oath of office for another five-year term, further cementing his position as one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.

Museveni, born in 1944 in the Mbarra district area of Uganda, has remained in power since 1986.

He began his education at Kyamate Boys School in 1953 before moving to Mbarara High School in 1959.

Following his family’s migration from Ntungamo in the 1960s, then within the British Protectorate of Uganda, he later attended Ntare School in 1961.

Museveni went on to study political science at the University of Dar es Salaam, where he founded the University Students’ African Revolutionary Front.
