Anger-fueled locals in Danshoshiya village, in the Kwanar Dangora region of Kano State, beat two suspected kidnappers to death.
According to the spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the incident occurred on November 9, 2024.
The suspects, identified as Haruna Abdulsalam and Mandi Snu, were apprehended by police operatives and local vigilante members for allegedly attempting to kidnap a 35-year-old resident named Haruna Abubakar.
While the police managed to arrest the suspects, the situation quickly escalated as aggrieved locals took the law into their own hands.
Despite police efforts to maintain control, the mob severely beat the suspects. The victims were eventually taken to a hospital, but they were pronounced dead upon arrival.
This tragic event underlines the deep-rooted mistrust in the justice system among some communities, where people may resort to vigilantism due to frustrations with perceived delays or inefficiencies in handling criminal cases.
However, such actions undermine the rule of law and often result in irreversible consequences, such as the loss of lives before due process is followed.
The police spokesperson condemned the mob action and reiterated that taking the law into one’s hands is a criminal offense. He emphasized the need for citizens to report crimes to law enforcement agencies and allow justice to take its course.
