Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won re-election for a historic fourth term after defeating right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro in Sunday’s presidential run-off.
Official results released by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court showed Lula securing 51.79 per cent of valid votes, against Bolsonaro’s 48.21 per cent.
The victory marks a remarkable political comeback for the 80-year-old president, who finished behind Bolsonaro in the first round of voting on October 4.
However, Bolsonaro has refused to concede defeat, alleging irregularities over the decision to extend voting by two hours.
The defeated candidate said he would seek the annulment of the election, despite reports that both campaigns had requested the extension.
Lula’s supporters celebrated the result as a historic victory, with the president securing his fourth term after previously governing Brazil between 2003 and 2010 before returning to office in 2023.
