No fewer than 1,303 candidates are set to contest Nigeria’s 109 senatorial seats in the 2027 general election, with only 123 of them being women.
The figures are contained in the final list of candidates released by the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of the election.
The list shows that the female candidates are drawn from different political parties, including the All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, African Democratic Congress, Nigeria Democratic Congress and other parties.
Among the prominent names on the list are serving senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is seeking re-election for Kogi Central on the PDP platform, and FCT Senator Ireti Kingibe, who is contesting on the ADC platform.
Former senators and political office holders also feature prominently, including Iyabo Obasanjo, who is contesting in Ogun State on the PDP platform, and former Lagos Deputy Governor Idiat Oluranti Adebule, the APC candidate for Lagos West.
Former senator Nkechi Nwaogu is also contesting for Abia Central under the NDC.
The participation of the women comes as political parties prepare for campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections, which will determine the composition of the Senate in the 10th National Assembly.
Female candidates are contesting across several states and the Federal Capital Territory, with some seeking a return to the National Assembly while others are making their first attempts to secure Senate seats.
