Nigeria has been declared wild Polio free by the World Health Organisation (WHO) after the completion of documentation for the free status.
This was revealed by the UN health agency via @WHOAFRO, it’s regional office for Africa in Brazzaville, Congo, official twitter account.
WHO stated that the Africa Regional certification commission for polio eradication (ARCC) had accepted Nigeria’s complete documentation for wild polio free status, saying that it is a historical day for Nigeria and the Global polio Programme.
Meanwhile, Dr Faisal Shuaib, the Executive Director and CEO of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), took to his tweeter account @drfaisalshuaib to describe the documentation as historical.
He said that it’s an amazing moment in history to have had the polio-eradication documentation accepted by (ARCC) and the Nigeria team which was led by NPHCDA and partners to demonstrate the evidence of the polio-free status.
Furthermore, Dr Shuaib stated that Nigeria achieving this feat is significant on multiple fronts.
He appreciated Nigeria’s President, Aliko Dangote and bill Gate for their financial and technological contribution towards the fight against polio.
Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a highly infectious viral disease caused by the poliovirus. It mainly affects children under five years old, spreading via contaminated water, food, or contact with an infected person.
While it has no cure, it is entirely preventable through vaccination.
It Spreads through the fecal-oral route or respiratory droplets (coughing or sneezing).
