Former Secretary to the Benue State Government, David Salifu, has died after sustaining gunshot injuries during an attack by suspected bandits along the Wukari-Makurdi road.
Salifu, who served as SSG under former Governor Gabriel Suswam, was also a lecturer at the Federal University, Wukari, Taraba State.
He reportedly died in the early hours of Friday at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi.
According to The Punch, the former SSG was travelling from Wukari to Makurdi on Thursday when armed men stopped his vehicle on the outskirts of Wukari.
The attackers were said to have ordered him to come down from his vehicle and mount a motorcycle.
He was allegedly shot after he challenged the armed men.
A close associate of the deceased and African Democratic Congress Benue South senatorial candidate, David Olofu, confirmed the incident.
Olofu said Salifu was a member of his campaign council and a close confidant.
“He was a member of my campaign council and a confidant. I learnt that he left Wukari and was coming to Benue when he encountered hoodlums at the outskirts of Wukari,” he said.
“They stopped his car and asked him to come down but the bandits thereafter shot him.”
According to Olofu, Salifu was first taken to a hospital in Wukari after the attack.
He said the injury was severe, prompting efforts to move him for better medical attention.
Olofu said they contacted the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Wukari, who released an ambulance to transport the former SSG with a team of doctors.
He added that the initial plan was to move Salifu to Abuja.
“But somehow, he was taken to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi where he died early hours of today,” Olofu said.
The reason Salifu was taken to Makurdi instead of Abuja was not immediately clear.
The death has thrown his associates and political allies into mourning, especially in Benue South where he remained active in political circles.
