2027: We’re Ready For Coalition Talks – NDC

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has signalled its readiness to enter coalition talks with other opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general election.

National Leader of the party and former Bayelsa State governor, Senator Seriake Dickson, disclosed this during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

Dickson said the NDC remained open to discussions within the opposition space, but expressed the hope that any eventual agreement would lead to support for the party’s candidates.Nigerian News Portal

“As an opposition leader, we will be open. Our party, the NDC, will be open to conversations within that space,” he said.Government Policy Updates

“But it is not for me or anyone to pre-empt those discussions. We hope that whatever discussions take place will lead to the NDC candidates being backed because we know the value of the candidates we are putting forward.”

The former governor said the party was not claiming superiority over other opposition platforms, but noted that further political engagements were likely after the nomination process.

“We are not claiming superiority. After the nomination process has ended, we will move into another phase of discussions. Whether there will be an agreement, I don’t know. We will try. Where it will lead, I don’t know, but all those are options that remain open,” he added.Top Stories Digest

Dickson’s comments come amid renewed conversations among opposition parties seeking to build a stronger front against the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, ahead of 2027.

The opposition space has witnessed major realignments since 2025, with several political figures moving across party lines in search of a platform capable of challenging the APC.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, while former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, later moved to the NDC following internal disputes and legal challenges within the ADC.Government Policy Updates

The ADC has been battling organisational and legal setbacks, including disputes over its leadership structure and efforts to deregister the party.

Despite the uncertainty in the opposition camp, Dickson said the APC would be defeated if Nigerians were allowed to freely choose their leaders.

“As leader of the NDC, and as a Nigerian who knows the feelings and yearnings of Nigerians, and who also knows that their aspirations have not been met, we believe that the APC government, the APC as a party, not just the President, will be defeated massively,” he said.

He called for a free and fair electoral contest, saying all parties should be allowed to test their strength before Nigerians.

“Allow every party that wants to contest. You can only defeat them in an electoral contest. So, let us have a free and fair election,” Dickson said.

The former governor also dismissed the lawsuit seeking the deregistration of the NDC, describing it as frivolous and politically motivated.

He insisted that the case would not stop the party from taking part in future elections, adding that all NDC nominations remained valid.

According to him, all NDC candidates will appear on the ballot.

Dickson also rejected claims challenging the party’s logo, saying no individual or group could claim exclusive ownership of the peace sign, which he said had been used globally for decades.

He maintained that the NDC complied with all constitutional and legal requirements during its registration, describing the court case as a distraction from more serious national issues.
