A Nigerian medical doctor, Dr Rasheed Abasi, has said there is nothing medically wrong with masturbation for men, arguing that scientific evidence supports its health benefits, particularly for older men.
Speaking on the Morayo Show recently, Abasi addressed a question on how unmarried men and women could maintain their sexual functions before marriage.
He said discussions on the subject should be viewed from a health perspective, separate from religious considerations.
According to him, medical research has shown that occasional masturbation can be beneficial, especially for men above the age of 50. He noted that the scientific community has continued to examine the issue despite cultural and religious sensitivities surrounding it.
He said, “Let’s put religion on the side, but let’s face the reality that you and I want to spend the most amount of time on earth, and we want it to be healthy.
“I’m telling you now, as a doctor, there’s nothing wrong with soapy for men. Soapy is masturbation; it’s okay.
“Actually, there’s a study that came out: for men over the age of 50, we actually get more benefits when you do masturbation once in a while.”
During the discussion, the host, Morayo Afolabi Brown opposed the position on religious grounds, stating that masturbation conflicts with Christian teachings and the beliefs of many faith communities. She argued that such practices should not be publicly promoted despite the medical arguments presented.
Responding, Abasi maintained that scientific recommendations are based on available evidence rather than religious doctrines. He explained that researchers who advocate regular ejaculation for men are aware of cultural and religious limitations but remain guided by scientific findings.
The doctor further stated that some recommendations discussed in scientific circles, including pornography and extramarital sexual relationships, are unlikely to receive approval from religious institutions.
However, he stressed that the role of science is to present findings, leaving individuals to make personal decisions based on their beliefs and values.
Abasi compared the human body to a machine that requires regular use to function effectively, arguing that inactivity could affect certain bodily functions over time.
He added that maintaining sexual activity in one form or another could contribute to overall health, help reduce the risk of some medical conditions, and support longevity.
“In order for us to live long, avoid cardiac problems, avoid prostate problems, and live long enough to be able to benefit from the children you’ve raised, with all your hustle, my brother, find a solution.
“The solutions are out there. Soapy is one. Pornography is one. A contracted side chick is another one.”
