President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a stern warning to bandits, kidnappers and sponsors of terrorism across Nigeria, urging them to surrender immediately or face decisive action from security forces.
In his Democracy Day address to Nigerians on Friday, President Tinubu declared that while the Federal Government remains committed to offering repentant fighters a path to reintegration, the opportunity would not remain available indefinitely.
“To bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terror: Surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State. These windows of surrender will not remain open forever. No mercy will be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians,” the President said.
The President said his administration had intensified efforts to combat insecurity through increased recruitment into the police and military, enhanced intelligence gathering, and sustained military operations against terrorist groups.
According to him, Nigeria has moved beyond conventional military training exercises with international allies to more precise counter-terrorism operations. He cited the successful degradation of an ISWAP command centre in Arege, Borno State, as evidence of the progress being made.
Tinubu noted that terror-related deaths have declined significantly since 2015, while more than 13,000 terrorists were neutralised in the past year alone. He also revealed that over 124,000 fighters and their dependants had surrendered since 2023 through the Operation Safe Corridor programme.
Despite the gains, the President acknowledged that the nation’s security challenges remain far from over, particularly following the recent abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo and Borno states.
“Democracy without security is not solid enough,” he said, adding that his administration had declared a security emergency and approved the recruitment of more than 50,000 additional police officers alongside thousands of military recruits.
Tinubu disclosed that the Federal Government’s 2026 budget allocated N5.41 trillion to defence and security, the largest security allocation in the country’s history.
Calling for national unity in the fight against crime, the President urged Nigerians to avoid ethnic profiling and divisive narratives.
“Crime has no ethnicity. We must stand united and be assured that the enemies of our nation shall soon be history. We will triumph over terror and continue to build a more prosperous nation,” he said.
