A fire incident on Wednesday triggered panic at the National Assembly complex in Abuja after flames briefly broke out near a hearing room in the Senate wing.
Videos shared on social media showed smoke billowing through the affected area as lawmakers and staff members scrambled to contain the situation.
Voices in the video could be heard saying, “The fire came from gas,” while another said, “No extinguisher.”
One of the clips also captured Senator Ned Nwoko (Delta North) leaving the scene as the emergency unfolded.
According to TVC, the fire occurred shortly after the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission completed the screening of Dr Zainab Marwa, the North-East nominee for the commission’s board.
The report, citing eyewitnesses, said the fire started from the kitchen section of the hearing room and was allegedly caused by a microwave that had been left on.
It added that Senators Asuquo Ekpenyong and Salihu Mustapha were among those who quickly joined efforts to put out the fire. They reportedly led manual firefighting efforts with others, using available materials such as water and detergents to stop the flames from spreading.
No injuries or fatalities were recorded in the incident, while activities in the area returned to normal shortly afterwards.
