University admission in Nigeria does not end with JAMB. In many institutions, the next major hurdle is the Post-UTME and screening can determine whether you gain admission, even with a strong UTME score.
Do not let anxiety take over
Build momentum before admission season begins.
Meanwhile, for many Nigerian students, the period after writing the JAMB feels strange. You have taken the exam, and all that remains is waiting for the next step.
However, while waiting for your JAMB result, many students make the mistake of pausing everything, which can be a problem. And that triggers smart candidates to begin preparing early.
The National Universities Commission (NUC), Nigeria’s university regulatory body, oversees quality and admission standards across Nigerian universities, while institutions release their specific screening requirements individually.
According to a Tribune Online report, PassEduAI, an AI-powered tutor that does more than marking answers is expanding beyond JAMB preparation to include post-UTME and other institutional examinations, with plans to build a comprehensive multi-examination system tailored to different test formats.
This development will help a lot of students who find it difficult to read and understand immediately.
Understand Post-UTME is different from JAMB
Understand that Post-UTME is different from JAMB, and many students assume that because they are already prepared for JAMB, they are automatically ready for Post-UTME.
JAMB tests broad subject knowledge across national standards. Whereas Post-UTME often feels different. Universities may ask more direct, faster, and sometimes more detailed questions based on your chosen course or institution’s style.
So, some schools focus heavily on time pressure and others emphasize accuracy. That means your preparation should be specific, and not generic.
Start with your preferred university’s admission pattern
Before opening any textbook, study about your preferred school first. Different universities handle Post-UTME differently. Some use written exams. Some rely on online screening. Others combine both.
As an aspiring student, visit your target university’s official website and review its last admission guidelines. Look at previous screening announcements, and also get in touch with the students who are studying there. That will help you understand what you are preparing for.
Revise the subjects that matter most
Focus on the subjects connected to your intended course and the four subjects you wrote in JAMB. If you are applying for engineering, your science subjects deserve priority.
If you are applying for law or mass communication, your attention should shift accordingly. And that is not the time to read everything again. Just a strategic revision is enough.
Practice under exam conditions
Reading is important and practice is better. Use past Post-UTME questions where available. Time yourself and answer under pressure.
This will help you identify weak areas early and improve speed. Many students know the answers, but lose marks because they cannot answer fast enough. Whereas that problem can be fixed.
Undoubtedly, waiting for JAMB results creates tension. But spending every day refreshing result portals or discussing expected scores with friends will not change your outcome.
What you can control is preparation. So, use the waiting period productively and turn anxiety into progress.
Build momentum before admission season begins
Students who prepare early usually feel calmer when admission forms finally open. Instead of panic, they already have confidence. That matters because admission seasons in Nigeria move quickly and deadlines appear fast.
On this note, during the 2026 JAMB Annual Policy Meeting on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions held in Abuja on Monday, JAMB set a deadline for university admissions.
And under the resolutions, all public universities are to finish their admission processes on or before October 31, 2026, while private universities have until November 30, 2026.
Therefore, your JAMB result matters, but it is not the finish line. Post-UTME may be the next big test standing between you and university admission. So while others wait nervously, prepare deliberately. That decision can give you an advantage.
