‘I Spent The Ransom On Sports Betting,’ Arrested Church Choir Master Confesses

Apart from being a teacher in a secondary school, 30-year-old Nathaniel Baiyegun was also the choir master of a Pentecostal church in the Ogijo area of Sagamu Local Government of Ogun State.

He was expected to be a shining light to his students as well as choristers, but he was recently arrested by operatives of the Ogun State Police Command over the death of a 16-year-old girl who was one of his former students.

The deceased girl was preparing for her West African Examinations Council (WAEC) examinations when she was allegedly killed by someone who was supposed to guide her after she failed the examination the previous year.

Even after allegedly knowing that the girl had died and her body had been dumped in a river in the MTN area of Ogijo, the teacher reportedly collected a ransom of N500,000 from her father, which he later admitted spending on sports betting.

Though Baiyegun claimed that the killing was accidental, preliminary police investigations revealed that he was allegedly involved in internet fraud and had at one time requested nude pictures from the deceased girl, which were reportedly sent to him through his mobile phone.

Nathaniel allegedly believed he had successfully concealed the crime after dumping the teenager’s body in a river in Ogijo, but he was later arrested by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Section of the Ogun State Police Command.

Sources at the command revealed that the 30-year-old suspect reunited with his former student after about a year, allegedly attempted to force her into a relationship with his friend, identified simply as Sola, kidnapped her, abandoned her in an uncompleted building, and administered an overdose of sleeping tablets to her.

The 30-year-old teacher told newsmen: “I am a teacher at a private school in Ogijo and she was one of the students in my former school. I am also the choir master in my church. She was not one of my direct students because she was in the humanities while I teach only science students. I was teaching Physics and Further Mathematics.”

“We became very close but there was no amorous relationship between us. At times, she would go to my table in the staff room and drop gifts for me, even when I was not around.

“That was just it until I deleted her number from my phone and told her not to call me again. She lied to our then principal that she was coming to return my power bank after she was caught at a faraway location. It was true that I gave her my power bank, but she had already returned it to me at the school.

“So, when she called me and asked me to help her lie to the principal that she had come to return my power bank, I was very upset and severed my relationship with her.”

The suspect continued: “I didn’t hear from her again after that. She had graduated from the former school and I had also changed schools. It was on April 7 this year, while I was shooting content for my Instagram page, that I saw her again with her friends.

“The last time I saw her before April 7 this year was after her WAEC examinations last year. She was the one who saw me and called me. I asked if she was writing JAMB, but she told me she did not do well in her O’Level results. She failed Mathematics and English and wanted to rewrite WAEC.

“I wished her the best of luck and she gave me her phone number again. I introduced my JAMB and WAEC coaching class to her and advised her to attend the coaching camp we were organising for candidates.

“One of my friends had been pestering me that he wanted to date the girl. My friend’s name is Sola. On April 8, I called her to come to my new school. She was at her coaching centre when I called her. My friend was waiting for her behind the school.

“At about 5:30 p.m. on April 8, she arrived. I was already about going to class when she came. I introduced her to Sola and left them behind the school while I went to class.

“When I returned around 6:30 p.m., I met only her behind the school. My friend had left, and when I asked her what transpired between them, she told me that my friend demanded sex from her and she told him she was on her menstrual period.

“At that point, she requested transport fare from me, but I told her I had no money. That was when we planned a fake kidnap. Both of us planned it together. The intention was to collect money from her family. She told me her father could not afford to pay ransom, but that she had a wealthy uncle who could pay. I initiated the kidnap.”

Baiyegun confessed: “After our agreement, she asked me to keep her in our school, but because the proprietress was not in Nigeria and must not know, I could not keep her there. The proprietress has a way of monitoring the school. I then took her to an uncompleted building behind the school.

“While she was there, I used her phone to negotiate a ransom of N3 million with her father. I used her phone to communicate with him. She later complained that she could not sleep well on the first night she stayed in the building.

“After she complained that she was scared and could not sleep, I gave her four doses of D5 sleeping tablets and left her there. I was away the next day after giving her the drugs because I attended our pastor’s father’s burial ceremony. I returned on the night of April 11.

“When I came back from the burial, I went to check on her and discovered that she was gasping for breath. I quickly stopped a motorcycle and took her to a river in the MTN area, where I dumped her body. I lied to the bike rider that she was sick and that I wanted to take her to my aunt for treatment.”

He further stated: “After everything, the father agreed to pay the ransom and sent N500,000 to me, but I did not tell him that his daughter was already dead. I lied to him that she would be released as soon as the ransom was paid.
