The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), on Saturday, confirmed the killing of senior ISIS commander Abu Bilal al-Minuki during a joint counter-terrorism operation carried out by Nigerian and United States forces.
This was contained in a statement issued Saturday by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba.
According to him, the precision strike was conducted under the recently established US-Nigeria intelligence-sharing and counter-terrorism partnership.
US President Donald Trump had earlier announced the operation, describing al-Minuki as the second-in-command of ISIS in the region.
“Tonight, at my direction, brave American forces and the Armed Forces of Nigeria flawlessly executed a meticulously planned and highly complex mission,” Trump reportedly said.
The operation, GISTSMATE MEDIA gathered, dealt a major blow to terrorist activities across Nigeria, the Lake Chad Basin, and the Sahel region.
“Our efforts represent a major breakthrough in the ongoing fight against terrorism and violent extremism in Nigeria, the Lake Chad Basin, the Sahel region and globally,” the DHQ stated.
The military described al-Minuki as a key ISIS operational strategist who coordinated media operations, economic warfare, and the production of weapons, explosives, and drones for ISIS affiliates outside Nigeria.
According to the DHQ, intelligence reports suggested that as recently as February 2026, al-Minuki may have been elevated to head the General Directorate of States, making him one of the most senior figures within the global ISIS hierarchy.
The military further disclosed that in 2023, al-Minuki served as the Nigeria-based Emir of the al-Furqan GDP Office, where he supervised ISIS-linked operations across West Africa and the Sahel, including attacks targeting civilians and minority communities.
The DHQ also linked him to the 2018 Dapchi schoolgirls abduction and revealed that he maintained longstanding ties with ISIS-West Africa.
Intelligence records further showed that between 2015 and early 2016, al-Minuki facilitated the movement of fighters to Libya in support of ISIS operations in North Africa.
Before pledging allegiance to ISIS in 2015, al-Minuki was reportedly a prominent commander within Boko Haram.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria commended personnel involved in the operation and appreciated the continued support of U.S. forces in the fight against terrorism.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain steadfast in ongoing operations aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure, protecting civilians, and ensuring lasting peace and stability across the nation and the wider region,” the statement added.
