Kwankwasiyya Movement has tackled a former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, for allegedly claiming that the leader of the movement and chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is secretly working for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Shekarau, who recently returned to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), was quoted in a viral video clip that both he and Kwankwaso are working for Tinubu’s reelection, though the latter is doing so underground.
Shekarau had distanced himself from such a remark, attributing it to the mischief of fake news merchants.
The story was linked to a local radio station, which claimed to have obtained the clip from a TikTok video. However, despite repeated requests to have access to the original video, the platform did not provide it at the time of filing this report.
GISTSMATE MEDIA reported that Kwankwaso recently defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the NDC, alongside the 2023 Labour Party Presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Several ADC chieftains had accused the duo of being self-centered by leaving the party over the uncertainty of getting its ticket to run for presidency – a claim they both debunked.

👉 JOIN WHATSAPP CHANNELFollowing his defection, Shekarau was chosen as the APC consensus candidate for Kano Central Senatorial District, the seat he held under the same party between 2019 and 2023, before he crossed to the PDP.
But the Kwankwasiyya spokesperson, Habibu Saleh Mailemo, in a statement on Tuesday, described the alleged comment attributed to Shekarau as baseless and an attempt to seek political relevance.
Mailemo said someone of Shekarau’s calibre ought to weigh his words carefully before making public statements, warning that such accusations could diminish his own standing.
“When you dish out baseless accusations and unwarranted statements just to score a political goal, you are simply trying to attract attention to yourself. Shekarau has shown that whenever he needs attention, the best way is to jab at our leader,” he said.
He stressed that Kwankwaso is known for being straightforward in his political dealings.
“Everybody knows that my boss is a straightforward person. If he is for you, he is for you. He doesn’t play games,” Mailemo added.
The spokesperson further argued that Shekarau had “outlived his relevance in Kano politics” and was now being used by others to score cheap political points. He maintained that the allegation was “unwarranted, unsubstantiated and mischievous.”
Mailemo expressed confidence that the truth would prevail as the 2027 election approaches, insisting that Kwankwaso remains consistent in his political stance.
Aide Distances Shekarau From Comment
Shekarau’s spokesperson, Associate Professor Sule Ya’u Sule, denied the comment attributed to his boss, saying it originated from fake news merchants. He stated that the story did not specify where or when Shekarau made the comment.
“The genesis of the story is from one Igbo online blogger, who has since apologised and promised to bring it down. In fact, Shekarau is not even in Kano; he was in Abuja when the said comments were said to be made by him, so they are not from him. It’s from peddlers of fake news,” he added.
