‘I Warned That Coup Against Tinubu Would Fail’ – Islamic Cleric Testifies In Court

Islamic cleric, Sheikh Abdulkadir Sani, has revealed before a Federal High Court in Abuja that he warned alleged coup plotters their plan to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government would fail despite receiving money from them for prayers.

The revelation came on Monday, May 11, during the continuation of the alleged coup trial in Abuja.

According to a video recorded statement played in court, the Kaduna based cleric said he was approached through an intermediary identified as Sanda to offer spiritual support for the alleged operation.

Mr Sani told investigators that after carrying out prayers, he informed the group that the plot was doomed because some members would eventually betray the others.

According to Nigeria Newsdesk he reportedly said, “I told them the plan would fail because they would be exposed from within”.

The cleric admitted that money was transferred to him but insisted the funds were meant for prayers and charity, not to support any coup. “I did not collect money for a coup. The money was for prayers,” he said.

He also disclosed that names of alleged participants were sent to him for inclusion in prayers and had been submitted to the court.

In a related development, Zekari Umoru, a Julius Berger Nigeria Plc employee in the Maintenance Department of Presidential Villa, Abuja has narrated how he was recruited into the plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government.

Umoru is one of the defendants in the ongoing trial of six persons allegedly involved in the plotting of a coup against Tinubu’s government.

The Julius Berger employe who is the 4th defendant in the alleged treasonable charge spoke in video evidence played before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Umoru said he was deceived by co-suspects involved in the coup plot.

In the video recordings of his extra-judicial statement, Umoru narrated how his contact with individuals later identified as key figures in the case began in May 2025, through the 3rd defendant, Insp Ahmed Ibrahim, also attached to the Presidential Clinic.

He told investigators that Ibrahim introduced him to a man called, Hassan Mohammed, who he later identified as “Col. Mohammed Ma’aji,” under the pretext of offering him electrical work at a building under construction. READ MORE
