Bayo Onanuga, a presidential aide to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has launched a scathing attack on former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, describing him as a “gbajue politician of this era” amid intensifying political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a strongly worded statement, the aide also took a swipe at former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, suggesting that he has now had a change of heart after backing Obi in the 2023 presidential election.
According to Tinubu’s aide, Obi’s political approach is driven by self-interest, alleging that he avoids competitive party primaries and prefers arrangements that favour his emergence as a consensus candidate.
“The scales have now fallen from the eyes of Babachir Lawal,” the statement read. “He now realizes that Obi, who dreads primaries, desires a consensus that benefits him alone — a philosophy that appears ingrained in him.”
The aide further accused Obi of lacking the capacity to build and sustain a political structure, claiming he often aligns with platforms where groundwork has already been laid by others.
“In street parlance, it is ‘me only, nobody else’ or ‘I before anybody else’. Obi is a very selfish politician. He cannot build a political party. He goes to where others have toiled and takes the biggest share,” the statement added.
The remarks add to the growing war of words among political actors as alliances shift and narratives sharpen ahead of the next general election cycle.
