Security Operatives Arrest Six Fulani Men, Leader For Suspected Kidnapping, Recover Weapons

Operatives of the Oyo State Police Command have arrested a former traditional leader (sarki) and six others identified as Fulani men in the Ilora area of Afijio Local Government Area of the State, for suspected involvement in a kidnapping ring.

An eyewitness familiar with the incident said residents of the community were thrown into tension on Tuesday night following a dramatic security situation that led to the arrest of the former traditional leader and the other suspects.

The incident, which reportedly occurred around 9:18pm on April 21, 2026, began when a local vigilante member noticed a suspicious middle-aged man loitering near a neighbourโ€™s residence in the Olorunsogo community.

According to the eyewitness, the local security guard approached the stranger to question his presence, but the suspect claimed he was on his way to the residence of the former Sarki.

However, his sudden attempt to flee moments later heightened suspicion of his movement and mission in the community.

The eyewitness said that while the local vigilante officer could not apprehend the suspicious stranger, the fleeing suspect abandoned a sack containing several incriminating items, including a syringe, blade, sponge, comb, toothbrush, torchlight, machete, a mobile phone, a double-barrel gun, a single-barrel gun, and locally made ammunition.

The discovery immediately raised alarm across the community, prompting a swift report to the Ilora Divisional Police Command.

Acting on preliminary findings, operatives of the police division traced the development to the residence of the former Sarki, where a joint operation involving police officers and operatives of the Amotekun Corps led to the arrest of six Fulani men.

The eyewitness told SaharaReporters that following initial interrogation, three of the suspects were released, while the remaining three, including the former Sarki, were transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping Squad (AKS) in Iyaganku, Ibadan, for further investigation.

According to the eyewitness, the incident has sparked concerns among residents, many of whom questioned the circumstances surrounding the release of the three suspects and called for transparency in the ongoing investigation.

Reacting to the incident, the traditional ruler of Ilora commended residents for their vigilance and restraint, noting that the situation could have escalated into mob action.

He added that he had contacted the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) to ensure that due process is followed and that justice is served.

Meanwhile, members of the community have called on the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Ayodeji Abimbola, to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident and bring all culpable individuals to justice.
