As the political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 elections gradually intensifies across Oyo State, particularly in Lagelu Local Government Area, it has become necessary to critically examine the rising claims surrounding Mogaji Olatoye “Bigdaddy Sugar” and his perceived political strength.
While political ambition is a legitimate right, it must be anchored on verifiable grassroots influence, tested electoral value, and the capacity to build not merely inherit structures. On these crucial indices, serious questions continue to trail Bigdaddy Sugar’s political relevance.
Much of the recognition surrounding Bigdaddy Sugar is largely tied to the enduring legacy of his late brother, Olatoye Temitope Sugar. The late federal lawmaker was a formidable grassroots politician who represented Lagelu/Akinyele Federal Constituency and built a wide-reaching political network before his untimely death in 2019.

However, political history has repeatedly shown that structures built on personal charisma, deep community ties, and years of strategic engagement do not automatically transfer by bloodline. The late Olatoye Sugar’s influence was earned through years of visible empowerment, accessibility, and constituency service qualities that cannot be assumed but must be demonstrated.
Claims that Bigdaddy Sugar commands a formidable political structure in Lagelu appear exaggerated when subjected to scrutiny. What exists, at best, is a fragmented remnant of his late brother’s network: one that has since dispersed across various political interests and alignments.
True political structure is not static; it requires constant nurturing, strategic leadership, and the ability to inspire loyalty beyond sentiment. Without these, what remains is merely an illusion loud in rhetoric but weak in the electoral substance.
In politics, popularity on social media or among a narrow circle does not equate to electoral value. Elections are won through ward-by-ward penetration, polling unit dominance, and sustained grassroots engagement.
There is little evidence to suggest that Bigdaddy Sugar has independently tested his strength at the ballot or demonstrated the capacity to mobilize voters across Lagelu. Without such proof, assertions of political dominance remain speculative at best.
Perhaps the greatest challenge facing Bigdaddy Sugar is the burden of comparison. The name “Sugar” carries weight in Lagelu politics, but it also sets a high bar.
To step into that space requires more than symbolic association; it demands strategic thinking, political maturity, and a proven track record of service. Until these are evident, attempts to leverage that legacy may continue to fall short of expectations.
As 2027 approaches, the people of Lagelu must look beyond sentiments and inherited recognition. Leadership should be entrusted to individuals who have demonstrated capacity, built their own structures, and possess verifiable electoral strength.
At this stage, Mogaji Olatoye “Bigdaddy Sugar” appears to be riding in the shadows of a legacy rather than standing firmly on his own political foundation. And in the unforgiving arena of electoral politics, shadows rarely win elections.
