The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that troops of Operation Hadin Kai repelled a terrorist attack on their base in Benisheikh, Borno State.
In a statement on Thursday, the military said insurgents launched a coordinated assault on the Brigade Headquarters of the 29 Task Force Brigade at about 12:30 am on April 9, 2026, in an attempt to breach the facility’s defensive perimeter.
Troops, led by the Commander of the 29 Brigade, Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, responded with what the military described as courage and professionalism, engaging the attackers with superior firepower.
“In a well-coordinated counteraction, the insurgents were decisively engaged and forced to retreat in disarray, abandoning their mission and leaving behind traces of their failed assault.”
The DHQ said the attack reflects the desperation of terrorist groups following heavy losses recorded in recent military operations, noting that such offensives have continued to fail against fortified military positions.
Despite repelling the attack, the military confirmed that some soldiers lost their lives during the encounter.
It said the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, has paid tribute to the fallen personnel, describing their sacrifice as a source of pride to the Armed Forces and the nation.
The High Command also extended condolences to the families of the deceased.
Explaining why the identities of the victims have not been released, the military said it is following established procedures.
“In line with established military tradition and respect for the fallen, the general public and media are kindly requested to allow the Armed Forces to formally notify the next of kin before the release of further details.”
The DHQ urged the public to disregard misinformation and unverified reports circulating on social media, warning that such content could undermine ongoing operations and national security.
It added that clearance and exploitation operations are ongoing in the area to track fleeing insurgents and prevent them from regrouping.
The military reaffirmed its commitment to combating terrorism, stating that troops remain resolute in sustaining pressure on insurgents across the North-East.
It also called on citizens to support security agencies with credible information and remain vigilant as operations continue.
Further updates, the DHQ said, will be provided when necessary.
