In a remarkable achievement for Nigeria, 14-year-old Adeolu Oluwadamilola Ooreofe from Ekiti State has emerged champion of the 2026 African Spelling Bee in the Junior Category.
The competition, held in Harare, Zimbabwe, featured contestants from over 20 African countries, including South Africa, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Malawi.
Damilola, a student of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado Ekiti, advanced through the ranks after finishing first at the Ekiti State level and second at the national qualifier in Port Harcourt before clinching the continental title.
As champion, she was awarded a 5,000 dollar educational scholarship and a plaque.
She has built a strong record in spelling competitions, placing second in the 2023 MTN Spelling Bee, second in the 2024 Ekiti State Spelling Bee, fifth in the 2025 African Spelling Bee, and second in the 2025 Nigeria Spelling Bee.
Damilola was coached by Gbenga Julius, who has also trained other top young spellers in the country.
She is now set to represent Africa at the World Spelling Bee in China later this year.
Her achievement highlights the potential of Nigerian students when supported with quality training and mentorship.
