Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of transportation and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), says attack on the party’s office in his hometown in Rivers state will not deter his supporters from “voting out” the current administration.
On Friday, some yet-to-be-identified persons set ablaze the ADC secretariat in Ubima, Ikwerre LGA of state.
Amaechi was scheduled to officially register as ADC member at Ward 8 in Ubima by 10:00am on Friday.
However, residents of the community reportedly woke up to an early morning fire that destroyed a section of the party office.
The incident caused panic among residents in the area.
Reacting to the development in a statement posted on X, Amaechi described the attack as “evil acts of intimidation and violence, urging security agencies to go after the perpetrators.
“I have told our ADC party members and my supporters not to resort to violence or retaliation. Security agencies must apprehend and bring the perpetrators and their sponsors to book,” the former governor of Rivers wrote.
“These evil acts of intimidation and violence cannot deter us but will make us stronger and more determined to vote out this government that is rapidly destroying our country, Nigeria.”
The attack came hours before the former governor officially registered as a member of the opposition party at ward 8 in the local government.
Amaechi urged supporters who gathered to welcome him to shun all forms of violence that could lead to loss of life.
“Don’t be violent because violence may lead to the death of somebody — don’t be violent. At the same time, they can’t stop us from meeting in our community,” he said.
