Vice President Kashim Shettima has dismissed claims that governors are being pressured to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that those joining the party are doing so voluntarily.
Shettima clarified while representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at an interfaith Iftar held at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The gathering brought together political leaders, religious figures and government officials to observe both Ramadan and Lent.
Addressing concerns over the recent wave of defections to the APC, Shettima rejected suggestions that state governors were being forced to join the ruling party.
“Nobody is coercing the governors of Rivers, Delta, Kano or any other state to join the APC. It is at their own volition because they have seen the light,” Shettima said.
He added that the ruling party currently enjoys a stronger political position compared to the period leading up to the 2023 Nigerian general election.
“Politically speaking, we are in a more comfortable position now than in 2023,” the Vice President noted.
Shettima also criticised opposition parties, accusing them of spreading misinformation and engaging in political hypocrisy as the country gradually approaches another electoral cycle.
In particular, he aimed at the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for its earlier advocacy of the electronic transmission of election results.
According to him, the party undermined its own credibility after launching an online membership registration portal that allegedly became flooded with questionable entries.
“The same people who were adamant that we must have electronic transmission of votes opened their portal for membership registration, and it was flooded with fake names and fictitious identities,” he said.
The Vice President urged members and supporters of the APC to remain loyal and actively promote the administration as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the next election season.
“Excellencies, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, the political season is around the corner. We are all political actors. We have to sell our government. We have to stand behind our administration,” Shettima added.
