A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) exploded on Wednesday at the Bayelsa state secretariat complex in Yenagoa, the capital.
Musa Mohammed, police spokesperson in Bayelsa, said in a statement that the explosion occurred at about 6 am, noting that no casualties were reported.
Mohammed added that Iyamah Edebor, the state police commissioner, immediately led the explosive ordinance disposal (EOD) unit, special drone unit and other tactical teams to the scene.
“On arrival at the scene the operatives of the Explosive Ordinance Unit swiftly contained the explosion,” the statement reads.
“The area was immediately cordoned off, and upon a detailed search, one unexploded IED was [identified] by EOD operatives and was rendered safe. No lives lost, no property destroyed.”
The police spokesperson added that a 60-year-old suspect, Pentecost Elijah, from Otuan community in the southern Ijaw LGA, was “arrested at the scene in connection with the incident.
“He is currently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department, and upon conclusion, the suspect will be charged to court,” Mohammed said.
“Members of the public are advised to remain calm and continue with their lawful business activities.”
