The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has deregistered over 400,000 companies in 2025 over prolonged inactivity and failure to meet statutory requirements, in a move to sanitise the country’s corporate register.
Registrar-General of the commission, Mr Hussaini Magaji, who disclosed this during activities marking the CAC’s 35th anniversary in Abuja at the weekend, said the exercise was aimed at strengthening confidence in the country’s corporate regulatory framework.
Magaji said the mass deregistration became necessary to weed out inactive and non-compliant entities and protect the integrity of the commission’s database.
“In 2025 alone, the commission deregistered over 400,000 companies, in a bid to clean up its database from inactive and non-compliant entities,” he said.
According to him, the action is part of efforts to promote transparency, credibility and trust in Nigeria’s business environment, ensuring that only active and law-abiding companies remain on the register.
On support for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), the CAC boss revealed that the commission, in collaboration with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), facilitated free business registration for 250,000 entrepreneurs.
He described the initiative as a deliberate intervention to reduce the cost of business formalisation and encourage small businesses to operate within the regulated economy, noting that it would ease entry barriers and expand participation in the formal sector.
He also said the commission has operationalised a Beneficial Ownership Register, which allows the public to identify the ultimate owners of companies operating in Nigeria. He noted that the register has gained global recognition as a reference point for corporate transparency and the fight against financial crimes.
Speaking on staff welfare, the registrar-general said CAC has introduced housing and vehicle loan schemes and is planning to establish a health facility for serving and retired staff. He added that the anniversary celebration reflected the commission’s teamwork, resilience and commitment to service delivery.
“The strength you see here today represents our workforce and their dedication to serving over 200 million Nigerians,” he said.
Recall that as part of its drive to sanitise the corporate registry, the CAC had earlier announced plans to delist 100,000 companies over prolonged inactivity and failure to comply with provisions of the Companies and Allied Matters Act.
In a public notice, the commission said the affected firms included companies that had ceased operations, remained inactive for at least 10 years, or failed to meet key regulatory obligations such as filing annual returns and disclosing Persons with Significant Control.
The CAC had given the affected companies a 90-day window to regularise their status by filing all outstanding returns and, where applicable, sending activation emails to its official email address.
