US Department Of State Reveals Four Main Reasons For Visa Revocations

The U.S. Department of State has identified overstays, driving under the influence, assault and theft as the four leading reasons for the revocation of more than 100,000 visas since President Donald Trump returned to office last year.

The department said the visa cancellations form part of a broader immigration crackdown under the Trump administration, which has resulted in a record number of revocations and deportations, including cases involving migrants who previously held valid visas.

“The State Department has now revoked over 100,000 visas, including some 8,000 student visas and 2,500 specialized visas for individuals who had encounters with U.S. law enforcement for criminal activity. We will continue to deport these thugs to keep America safe,” the department said in a post on X.

State Department deputy spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the scale of the revocations represents a 150 per cent increase compared with 2024, reflecting stricter enforcement and tighter visa policies.

According to the department, the administration has also toughened visa screening processes, expanding social media vetting and strengthening background checks for applicants and existing visa holders.

As part of the measures, the State Department has launched a Continuous Vetting Center to ensure that visa holders already in the United States comply with the country’s laws.

“All foreign nationals on American soil comply with our laws, and that the visas of those who pose a threat to American citizens are swiftly revoked,” Pigott said.

In November, the department said it had revoked about 80,000 non-immigrant visas since Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025, for offences ranging from driving under the influence to assault and theft.

The State Department has also directed U.S. diplomats abroad to be alert to visa applicants considered hostile to U.S. interests, particularly those with a history of political activism.

Trump administration officials have further said that student visa holders and lawful permanent residents with “green cards” may face deportation over their support for Palestinians and criticism of Israel’s conduct in the Gaza war, describing such actions as a threat to U.S. foreign policy and accusing those involved of being pro-Hamas.
