The Kano State Police Command has opened an intense investigation after two women — who are senior and junior wives — were gruesomely killed.
This was after some unknown attackers set them ablaze inside their matrimonial rooms in broad daylight.
The chilling incident happened on Thursday afternoon in Tudun Yola, Gwale Local Government Area, at a time when the husband was away and the neighbourhood unusually quiet.
Police spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the incident to journalists but declined to give details “so as not to jeopardise the ongoing investigation.”
He disclosed that two mobile phones believed to belong to the suspected killers were recovered at the scene.
He added that investigators also discovered that the senior wife was injured before being set on fire.
A friend of the husband noted that the attackers had slipped into the house long before dusk, but no one noticed.
Anas Sha’aibu, one of the children of the senior wife, recounted the nightmare:
“I was at home at night when my father called, asking me to rush to the the family house because there was a fire. But when we arrived, what we found was something else entirely. The junior wife was already burning. My mom locked herself inside the bathroom.”
He said the family struggled to break the door. “When we finally forced it open, we found her dead too. We realised her room had also been set on fire — the flames were pushed through the bathroom ventilation.”
Anas explained that CCTV footage from a neighbour showed the attackers arriving at the house around 12:30pm, entering without resistance and remaining inside for hours.
“No one knew they were inside until after the Maghrib prayer,” he said.
He narrated how one of the children of the house returned after sunset but found the door locked from within.
“He knocked repeatedly but no one opened. He called my parents’ phones but none of them answered. That was when he contacted our father, who immediately instructed me to rush home — only to meet this disaster.”
At first, the family suspected an accidental fire — until they examined the house closely.
“The main sitting room was untouched,” Anas said. “We found a jerrycan of petrol. We also saw that the generator had been tampered with and fuel poured around.”
He said one wife was burnt on a chair, while petrol was splashed across the junior wife’s entire room, including her bed.
“The whole mattress was burnt. Everything in her room was deliberately set on fire,” he said.
Police say investigations are ongoing as residents of Tudun Yola remain gripped by fear and disbelief over the brutal attack.
