Manchester United suffered one of the biggest humiliations in their recent history on Wednesday night, crashing out of the Carabao Cup to League Two side Grimsby Town after a dramatic penalty shootout at Blundell Park.
The tie finished 2–2 in normal time, with Grimsby racing into a shock two-goal lead through Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren inside the opening half-hour.
United looked on the verge of disaster before Bryan Mbeumo pulled a goal back in the 75th minute, and Harry Maguire powered home an equaliser late on to force spot-kicks.
But in a nerve-shredding shootout that stretched deep into sudden death, Grimsby held their nerve to win 12–11 on penalties.
The victory sparked wild celebrations from the home crowd and dumping the Premier League giants out of the competition.
