A 16-year-old student, Miss Praise Malachi, has drowned in Zaria, Kaduna State, while hurrying to check her Senior Secondary School Examination (SSCE) result.
Praise, a final-year student of Government Day Secondary School, Samaru, was reportedly excited after hearing from her friends that she had passed with excellent grades.
Her father, Emmanuel Malachi, narrated the heartbreaking incident.
“It was around 6:00 pm after rainfall when her friends came to my shop to tell her the result was out and she had done excellently well. Out of excitement, she rushed home to check on her phone. While crossing the small river created by the erosion, she slipped and the flood carried her away. Her body was later found in Hunkuyi, far away in Kudan Local Government Area.”
Neighbours Danladi Mudi and Emma Yashi confirmed that the area has long been plagued by erosion, making it dangerous whenever it rains.
“She was not the first to die in this flood. Several lives have been lost here before,” Yashi said.
The late teenager had been awarded a scholarship by the Centre for Girls Education, Zaria, due to her brilliance. Its Director, Habiba Mohammed, described her as one of the centre’s brightest students.
“Her death is a huge loss. She was an exceptional child with no record of misconduct. We appeal to authorities to urgently address the erosion problem and build a bridge to save lives,” Mohammed said while consoling the family.
