The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, has been laid to rest at his private residence in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
The monarch, who died at the age of 91, was buried on Monday in accordance with traditional rites.
The solemn ceremony was attended by prominent dignitaries, members of the royal family, and high-ranking chiefs of the Ijebu Traditional Council.
Oba Adetona, who reigned for over six decades, was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s longest-serving and most influential traditional rulers.
His burial signals the end of a remarkable era for the Ijebu people, whom he led with courage, modern thinking, and an enduring commitment to justice and the preservation of Yoruba cultural heritage.
Though the final rites were held in strict observance of traditional customs and away from public view, hundreds of Ijebu indigenes thronged various parts of the ancient town to honour a king many hailed as “fearless,” “principled,” and “a symbol of integrity.”
The revered monarch died on Sunday, only hours after the announcement of the death of former President, Muhammadu Buhari.
Details of Oba Adetona’s passing remain scant as of press time, but palace sources confirmed that the monarch died peacefully after a brief illness.
The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, described Oba Adetona as “a towering figure of integrity, courage, and service whose reign brought unprecedented progress to Ijebuland.”
