Edo Assembly Approves Death Penalty For Kidnapping

The Edo State House of Assembly has passed the State Kidnapping Prohibition Law 2025, a groundbreaking bill that imposes the death sentence on individuals convicted of kidnapping.

This legalisation was passed during the plenary on Tuesday amid the escalating wave of abductions and criminal activities that have plagued Edo State and the nation at large.

Majority Leader Charity Aiguobarueghian moved the motion for the House to resolve into a Committee of the Whole to consider the bill clause-by-clause. The motion was seconded by Minority Leader, Henry Okaka, representing Owan East constituency.

During the review, the lawmakers amended the existing Kidnapping Law of 2013, which had previously prescribed life imprisonment and the confiscation of property linked to kidnapping activities.

The new amendment, however, raises the penalty to a more stringent death sentence for offenders, with property used in the commission of the crime still subject to confiscation.

This amendment is seen as a strong response to the wave of kidnapping incidents that have plagued not only Edo State but several regions across Nigeria.

The relentless rise in abductions for ransom, especially in the southern and northern parts of the country, has put pressure on both state and federal authorities to adopt more severe measures.

In other developments, the Edo Assembly also passed a bill to repeal the State Electricity Law 2022, establishing the Edo State Electricity Market, Edo State Electricity Regulatory Commission, and the Edo Electrification Agency.

Additionally, the House confirmed Mrs. Kenny Okojie as the new Chairman of the Governing Board of the Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, a move aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery across the state.

As kidnapping cases continue to rise across Nigeria, including the frequent abductions in Edo State, the new law represents a bold attempt by the state government to tackle the menace and deter potential criminals from engaging in such life-threatening activities.
