A 33-year-old Iranian blogger, Soda Ebrahimi Shamsabadi, has been sentenced to death after being accused of insulting Iran’s Supreme Leader and carrying out activities deemed hostile to the government.
Shamsabadi was convicted of “corruption on earth” over allegations that she insulted the Supreme Leader, engaged in media and propaganda activities against national security, and worked on behalf of hostile governments.
She was also accused of photographing a location where a missile struck and sending the image to a Persian-language media outlet outside Iran, according to Iran International.
The blogger, who was raised in Tehran and lived in Bandar Abbas, has been detained at Bandar Abbas Prison since March. She reportedly spent 20 days in solitary confinement.
In posts shared during the January protests, Shamsabadi wrote about the killings and crimes carried out during the unrest, saying there were numerous photos, videos, documents and eyewitnesses documenting what had happened.
In her final Instagram post on February 23, she appeared to anticipate the possibility of her death.
Addressing her more than 10,000 followers, she wrote that if she ever left the world, they should know she had chosen the path she believed in.
Her case comes amid a reported rise in executions and death sentences in Iran.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said the increasing use of death sentences was aimed at instilling fear and suppressing dissent.
According to Iran Human Rights, at least 29 people arrested during the January protests have been executed since March, while the US-based Abdorrahman Boroumand Center has documented 950 executions in Iran so far this year.
