2027 Elections: Tinubu Has No Competition, Opposition Is Very Weak — Orji Kalu

Former Abia State governor Orji Kalu has said President Bola Tinubu faces no serious competition ahead of the 2027 presidential election, describing the opposition as too divided and very weak to pose a significant challenge.

Kalu, the Senator representing Abia North, made the remarks during Wednesday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today.

According to him, the strength of the opposition has been weakened by its failure to unite behind a common political platform and candidate.

“He has no competition. The opposition is very weak. He has no competition because you check what we did during the primaries, the number of people, our membership, things Tinubu has done all over Nigeria, the new roads he has created. If they were together, we would start having some sleepless nights. Now they are not together,” the senator said.

Kalu acknowledged that the Tinubu administration had not effectively communicated some of its achievements to Nigerians, saying the President had not been interested in publicising the work of his government.

He added that Tinubu had “a lot of archenemies” both within and outside government who were working against his administration.

Kalu also expressed confidence in Tinubu’s performance, saying the president had so far done “65 per cent well” and could be approaching “70 per cent by September or October”

He further predicted that voters in northern Nigeria would eventually support Tinubu based on what he described as the administration’s performance.

His comments come amid continuing realignments among opposition parties and political figures ahead of the 2027 election.

Efforts to build a strong coalition in 2025 under the African Democratic Congress initially brought together prominent figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.

However, disagreements over the structure and leadership of the coalition have resulted in further political realignments, leaving the opposition divided across different platforms.

Figures like Obi and Kwankwaso defected from the ADC.

Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, the leading candidates are Tinubu (APC), Obi and Kwankwaso (NDC), Atiku (ADC), and Seyi Makinde (APM).

In the 2023 presidential election, Tinubu was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), securing over eight million votes, ahead of Atiku and Obi, who had over six million votes each, and Kwankwaso, with over one million votes.
