Activist Aisha Yesufu has described election day as the best opportunity for Nigerians to bring about revolution through the ballot box.
Yesufu made the remarks during an interview with Symfoni TV, where she argued that Nigerians must use their votes to elect candidates capable of improving the country.
The co-convener of the BringBackOurGirls campaign said the Independent National Electoral Commission itself was not necessarily the problem with Nigeria’s electoral system, but rather the individuals responsible for implementing the electoral process.
She called for free, fair, and credible elections, warning that failure to ensure election results reflect voters’ actual choices could fuel public frustration and civil unrest.
Yesufu also questioned discrepancies between the results of the 2023 presidential election and those recorded in the National Assembly elections, stressing the need for greater accountability in the electoral process.
She urged Nigerians to pressure INEC officials, security agencies, and other stakeholders to uphold democratic principles rather than relying solely on their willingness to do so.
“There is no better day for revolution than election day. I’ve always said that INEC is not the problem. The people in INEC are the problem. So everybody should tell their members that are in INEC, police, or whatever to do the right thing.
“Because on that day we will stand and be on the streets. Nobody is going to work. Nobody is travelling. Everybody will be there. So we can easily do that revolution that people call for on that day.
“So that’s how we are going to follow it. There’s nothing like you are depending on the goodness of INEC. Everybody must do the right thing,” she said.
