Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Saturday welcomed over 136,000 new members who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) at a massive rally held at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kofar Mata, Kano.
The event, which attracted APC governors, senators, and other chieftains, was used to inaugurate a support group for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and to receive several high-profile defectors into the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Among those received were former senators Rufa’i Sani Hanga, Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, and Mas’ud El-Jibrin Doguwa.
Others included former PDP deputy governorship candidate, Senator Baraka Sani; former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Yusuf Bello Danbatta; former Chairman of Ungogo Local Government Area, Isyaku Ali Danja; Chairman of the NNPP (Fruit Faction), Ali Datti Yako; Chairman of the NNPP (Book Faction); NDC Deputy State Chairman, Badaru Umar; former NNPP senatorial candidate, Abdulmajid Dauda Dandawaki; and former Special Adviser to the President, Abdullahi Zubairu Abiya.
The defectors were accompanied by thousands of supporters dressed in APC colours of white, red and yellow. They carried banners and placards expressing support for the party and its candidates.
The crowd spilled onto major roads leading to the stadium, including Kanti Kwari, Kofar Mata, Kurmi markets and IBB Way, disrupting commercial activities and traffic around the area. Some traders at the Kanti Kwari textile market reportedly shut their shops over the unusually large gathering.

👉 JOIN WHATSAPP CHANNELSpeaking at the rally, Governor Yusuf described the mass defection as a strong indication of the growing acceptance of the APC in Kano State. He said the development would further strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
He commended the new members for their decision and urged them to remain committed to the development, peace and progress of Kano State and Nigeria.
“The APC remains a broad platform for all members to contribute meaningfully to the development of Kano State and Nigeria.
“I urge you to join hands with other stakeholders to strengthen unity, peace and stability within the party,” the governor said.
He assured the new members that his administration would continue to work with all stakeholders to promote unity, stability and sustainable development across the state. He also called on all APC members and supporters to remain united, peaceful and focused as the party prepares for 2027.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Senator Rufa’i Sani Hanga expressed commitment to the APC and pledged to mobilise support for President Tinubu and Governor Yusuf to ensure victory in the 2027 general elections.
The defectors said their decision to join the APC was based on their confidence in the leadership of President Tinubu and Governor Yusuf, as well as their commitment to supporting the development of Kano State.
The rally also witnessed the formal unveiling of the Tinubu Support Campaign Council.
