Youth Group Thumbs Defence Minister Strategies, Schools Sowore Over Border Security

PRESS STATEMENT
BY THE Convener CONCERNED NIGERIAN YOUTHS FOR GOOD GOVERNANCE (CNYGG)

RE: DEFENCE OF NATIONAL SECURITY STRATEGIES AND SUPPORT FOR THE HONOURABLE MINISTER OF DEFENCE, GENERAL CHRISTOPHER G. MUSA (RTD)

The Concerned Nigerian Youths for Good Governance (CNYGG) wishes to respond to recent comments credited to Omoyele Sowore regarding the Honourable Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa.

While we respect the right of every Nigerian to express opinions in a democratic society, we strongly reject narratives that undermine national institutions and demoralize those entrusted with the critical responsibility of safeguarding our nation.

It is important to state clearly that the suggestion of strengthening Nigeria’s borders—including the construction of physical barriers where necessary—is neither new nor “unserious.” Across the world, nations have adopted similar measures as part of broader security strategies:

* The US–Mexico Border Wall has significantly helped in reducing illegal crossings and transnational crimes in certain sectors.

* Israel’s security fence has been instrumental in curbing infiltration and terrorist attacks.

* India has fenced large portions of its borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh to enhance national security and reduce smuggling and insurgent movement.

These examples clearly demonstrate that border fencing is a globally recognized component of layered security architecture, not a standalone solution, but one that complements intelligence, technology, and military operations.

Nigeria, given its vast and often porous borders, faces unique challenges including arms smuggling, cross-border terrorism, and irregular migration. Exploring border control measures—including selective fencing—is therefore a strategic and proactive conversation, not a subject for ridicule.

We must also emphasize that national security cannot be achieved through constant criticism, personal attacks, or political sensationalism. What Nigeria needs at this critical time is collective responsibility, constructive engagement, and support for our security institutions.

The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher G. Musa (Rtd), has continued to demonstrate commitment, experience, and patriotism in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges. Transforming the security landscape requires time, coordination, and the support of all stakeholders.

CNYGG therefore calls on all Nigerians, especially public figures, to:
* Refrain from statements that could demoralize security personnel

* Engage constructively with government policies

* Support innovative and multi-dimensional approaches to ending insecurity

*Nigeria’s security is everyone’s responsibility, and unity remains our greatest weapon against insecurity*
