A 200-level student at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), identified as David, has initiated a ₦15 million lawsuit against a colleague, Adeife, from the Department of English, following a false rape allegation made against him on social media.
The accused has been given 14 days to comply with legal demands, which include a full retraction and damages, or face further legal action.
Adeife accused David on social media of being a “rapist and a rape apologist” and publicly shared his personal phone number, leading to harassment, threatening calls, and significant damage to his reputation.
The incident reportedly began after David shared his opinion regarding a separate rape allegation (“Mirabel issue”) on his WhatsApp status, which triggered a negative reaction from Adeife.
David documented the harassment and reported the matter to the university Senate. When summoned, Adeife was unable to provide evidence for her claims and admitted they were false.
Following the investigation, Adeife released a 41-second video apologizing and admitting she acted in the “heat of the moment”.
Despite the apology, David’s legal team is demanding ₦15,000,000 for defamation and emotional distress, noting that the apology does not absolve her of liability.
The university has notified Adeife’s department and her parents, but no formal academic sanctions (such as expulsion) have been officially announced.
The case has sparked intense debate regarding accountability for online, false accusations of gender-based crimes.
