Simone Lyke, 32, was mauled on the balcony of her apartment on July 24. As the Daily Mail reports, police said she had been trying to move the male Bully dog outside when it suddenly lunged at her.
At the time, Lyke had a friend visiting, which reportedly agitated the dog.
A bystander tried to intervene and threw a pizza at the dog, but this only caught his attention momentarily before he continued relentlessly biting Lyke.
She had tried to protect herself from the rampaging animal with her purse, witnesses told police, but her efforts were unsuccessful.
Her friend called for help. Simone was viciously mauled, reportedly losing her arm and suffering severe internal organ damage in the attack.
She was taken to University Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on Sunday, July 27th, which would have been her 32nd birthday.
ACS identified Lyke and another person (reportedly her boyfriend) as the owners of the pit bull. The second owner was hit with criminal citations after Lyke’s death.
People at the scene allegedly told police officers there had been other incidents involving the dog.
