Why Peter Obi Must Drop 2027 Ambition And Back Tinubu – Ohanaeze Ndigbo

A faction of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo has urged Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to abandon any plans of contesting the 2027 presidential election and instead support President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid.

In a statement on Wednesday, the group’s Deputy President-General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, said the South-East cannot produce a president on its own and warned that another run by Obi could worsen the region’s marginalisation.

He argued that Tinubu’s government had shown commitment to Igbo development, citing the appointment of David Umahi as Minister of Works and a “tripling” of federal allocations to the region.

“The current political dynamics, combined with Atiku Abubakar’s ambitions, mean that Obi running again will only split the opposition and hand Tinubu an easy victory,” the statement read.

The faction advised Obi to “prioritise Igbo interests over personal ambition” and negotiate for the region’s needs instead of contesting.

While acknowledging Obi’s constitutional right to run, it warned that another presidential bid could backfire and lead to “betrayal and setbacks” for the South-East, similar to 2019 and 2023.
