Veteran Nigerian actor Pete Edochie is currently trending on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook and WhatsApp in Nigeria following the rapid spread of a false rumour claiming that the Nollywood icon had died.
The unverified reports alleged that the 78-year-old actor—born March 7, 1947—was rushed to the hospital and passed away, with some posts falsely claiming that one of his sons, including Yul or Uche Edochie, had confirmed the news on Instagram.
These claims, pushed largely by engagement-hungry accounts, quickly went viral across X, WhatsApp, and Facebook, triggering shock, grief, and emotional tributes from fans.
Many Nigerians posted RIP messages, shared clips from Edochie’s legendary film roles, and circulated his famous proverbs, believing the reports to be true—until the claims were swiftly debunked.
However, checks by our correspondent confirmed Pete Edochie is hale and hearty.
This is not the first time Pete Edochie has been targeted by death hoaxes. Similar false reports circulated in 2012, 2020, 2023, and 2024, often traced to clickbait pages seeking views, likes, and ad revenue.
